GES Principal Message

Hello Galax Elementary Students and Parents!

Welcome to the 2018 - 2019 school year.  The faculty and staff of Galax Elementary School are excited about the possibilities this new year holds for our students.  “Minds Under Construction” will be our theme this year as we work collaboratively to manage the renovation while continuing to build excellence for our students.  The renovation will come with obstacles, but we must keep our eyes on the prize. GES is going to be a beautiful, air-conditioned school at the end of this process.  We will do our part to keep you informed of the many changes as they occur.

While our faculty and staff play a vital role in your child’s education, it is important to realize the role that you play as well.  Together we can make certain our students are happy and successful. Your role is to continually show interest and support for your child.  Daily punctuality and school attendance impact student achievement tremendously. We encourage you to review the Standards of Learning for your child’s classes so that you are familiar with what he/she will be learning this year.  You may find these at the Virginia Department of Education’s website, www.doe.virgina.gov/.  You may also contact the school for a paper copy.

Please stop by our office to pick up your Parent Portal login information.  The Parent Portal will allow you access to your child’s grades and attendance information from any computer or mobile device.  This is an excellent way to track your child’s progress at school!

At Galax Elementary School, we believe in fair and consistent discipline that encourages students to be responsible for their behavior.  We want to create a safe environment where courtesy, kindness, and respect prevail for faculty and students. This year we will continue to implement the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program.  We are committed to high student achievement and ensuring student success.

We also believe that ongoing communication between home and school is essential.  Please know that you are always welcome at Galax Elementary School. Our doors are always open to discuss your concerns and celebrations.  You are welcome to stop by, call, or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Computer Coding

Students in all grades at Galax Elemenary School are learning to write computer code.  According to Mitch Resnick (Watch his TED Talk) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology there are a number of academic advantages to young students learning to code.  These include:

  1. Math concepts such as variables and conditions
  2. Logic such as sequencing as well as cause and effect
  3. Techniques for solving problems
  4. Project design such as the importance of breaking down big ideas to specific tasks
  5. Benefits of collaboration and techniques for communicating ideas
  6. Ability to take criticism as well as identify and fix errors
  7. Perseverance in the face of difficulty

Take a look at what GES students are doing.

Veteran's Day at GES (2)

Galax Elementary School students took part in Veteran's Day activities on Friday November 10, 2017.  It was hard to tell who enjoyed the day more; the veterans or the students.

GES Shark Tank

Fourth grade students created their own version of the tv show Shark Tank. Students brainstormed, researched and created a technology product. After completing their product design and details, students drew their products and presented to the sharks. Our wonderful sharks were Dr. Legg, Mrs. Boyles, Officer Bobbitt, Mr. Rob, and Mr. Jett. The sharks asked many important questions to challenge our fourth grade entrepreneurs. Each student won some type of award for their product. Students also videoed the shark tank for us to create our tv show.
